[2] AN APPRAISAL ANALYSIS OF JUDGMENT AND APPRECIATION IN NAM CAO’S SHORT STORIES
The thesis was done in an effort to investigate and analyze the languages of Judgment and Appreciation in the category of Attitude, one of the three subsystems of the Appraisal theory in Nam Cao’s short stories and the English translational equivalents. In order to conduct the study, the descriptive analysis with the combination of both qualitative and quantitative research methods was adopted on the basis of the theories of Appraisal and Functional Grammar. The data for the study was built up with 300 Vietnamese samples of expressions of Judgment and Appreciation and 300 English translational equivalents in such forms as words, phrases, clauses and sentences from seven short Vietnamese stories by Nam Cao and the English translational version by Nam Cao. The study examined the semantic features and grammatical realizations of Judgment and Appreciation-expressions recognized in seven short Vietnamese stories and the English equivalents. Semantically, in the light of Appraisal Theory, the study revealed that Judgment expressions were realized in five sub-types, namely Normality, Capacity, Tenacity, Veracity, and Propriety, while Appreciation ones were also seen in five sub-types including Impact-Reaction, Quality-Reaction, Balance-Composition, Complexity-Composition, and Valuation. In terms of grammatical realization, based on Functional Grammar, the study found that the languages of Judgment and Appreciation were grammatically realized via such grammatical forms as Noun phrases, Verb phrases, Adjective phrases and Adverbial phrases in the Clause as Message, Clause as Exchange and Clause as Representation in form of both explicit and implicit. On the basis of the findings, several implications and suggestions on comprehending, translating the language of Judgment and Appreciation as well as learning and teaching English through language of Judgment and Appreciation in particular and Appraisal language in general were put forward.

[4] AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE STYLISTIC DEVICES COMMONLY USED IN “DE MEN PHIEU LUU KY” AND THEIR ENGLISH TRANSLATIONAL EQUIVALENTS IN “DIARY OF A CRICKET”
This thesis focused on identifying and analyzing stylistic devices commonly used in “De men phieu luu ky” by To Hoai and their English translational equivalents in “Diary of a Cricket” by Dang The Binh to discover their similarities and differences of using stylistic devices in two works. The data of the study were collected from “De men phieu luu ky” by To Hoai and “Diary of a Cricket” by Dang The Binh. All of 400 data were described and contrastively analyzed in stylistic aspects with qualitative and quantitative approaches to yield more precise points on stylistic devices used in literary language. On the basis of contrastive analysis, we realized that stylistic devices have a strong effect on the two works and the differences of using them make the meaning change in some cases. This thesis focused on analyzing some stylistic devices commonly used in the two works “De men phieu luu ky” by To Hoai and “Diary of a cricket” by Dang The Binh namely onomatopoeia, simile, metonymy, personification, polysemy, hyperbole, reduplicative, interjections and exclamatory words, stylistic inversion, repetition and enumeration to compare the loss and gain of meaning in the process of stylistic devices translation. With the findings in the two works, some suggestions have been partly proposed to contribute to better teaching, learning English as a foreign language, specifically the awareness of learners in using stylistic devices for interpreting and writing literary works. For teaching, teacher can encourage students to apply as many stylistic devices as possible to beautify their writing. Students should know how to choose and use them properly in each speech act. Moreover, they will know how the writers use stylistic devices to understand deeply the meaningful message which the author wants to convey in literary works.

[8] AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE SUB-CATEGORIES OF “ATTITUDE” IN THE BOOK THE WORLD IS FLAT BY THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF APPRAISAL THEORY
The present study explores sub-categories of Attitude -Affect, Judgement and Appreciation- in the book “The World is Flat” by Thomas L. Friedman in the light of Appraisal Theory. The study aims to investigate the syntactic and semantic realizations of Attitude sub-categories from 358 samples collected from the book. The thesis employed the descriptive method to fully describe the realizations of Attitude sub-categories in terms of syntax and semantics to obtain the setting goals. The finding of the research demonstrate that Attitude sub-categories can be recognized in various group and phrase structures in which nominal groups and adjective groups are more favourable. The study also works out typical functions of Attitude sub-categories as components in transitivity processes. Semantically, the findings show that all Appraisal evaluating criteria were reflected in the book and significantly the positive values are dominant. This is the interpersonal meaning which the book contributes to nurture its readers’ insights to the reality of the world in the era of digital technology. The study makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the sub-categories of Attitude in the book and provides the teachers and university students majoring in English with practical implication to evaluate a discourse fragment and interpret a discourse fragment in the light of Appraisal Theory and in line with Systemic Functional Linguistics.
