[1] AN INVESTIGATION INTO ADJUNCT USED IN THE TEXTBOOK SOLUTIONS (ELEMENTARY AND PRE-INTERMEDIATE) BY TIM FALLA, PAUL A DAVIES
This research paper deals with the linguistic features of the adverbial adjuncts in the texts of English in general and in the textbook Solutions in particular in terms of syntax, semantics. On the base of the statistics and analysis, the study aims at presenting the commonly used syntactic structures as well as the semantic features in the texts of adjuncts in English. In this thesis the author tried to distinguish adjunct from disjunct and conjunct as well as paid much attention to the semantic classification of adverbials. She also analysed the adjunct adverbials in English from collected data into three positions in the clause: initial, medial and end. The author hopes that from the results of the research, some interpretations can be applied in teaching and learning English and this can help learners understand or use “the peripheral part” of the sentence more easily and successfully.

[3] AN INVESTIGATION INTO ASSERTIVES IN PRESIDENTS’ WELCOME MESSAGES ON OFFICIAL WEBSITES OF COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES IN THE USA
Based on the theories of Speech Acts, this paper aims to investigate assertives in Presidents’ Welcome Messages (PWMs) in an attempt to discover their striking linguistic features in terms of lexical, syntactic and semantic aspects. The method design in the study is qualitative and quantitative combined approach which includes descriptive and inductive methods. The researcher has chosen fifty welcome messages ranged from 200 to 400 words for the study. The sample of an assertive speech act in PWMs is a sentence or a sequence of sentences which convey information about some state of affairs of the world (i.e.tertiary institutions) from the writer (i.e. presidents) to the reader (i.e. perspective learners) to cause some kind of action. Yule [1996] classified representatives or assertives into four types namely statements of fact, assertions, conclusions as well as descriptions. The findings also aim at suggesting some implications for teaching English to Vietnamese learners, especially who are interested in the writing skill. As regards, the findings, in terms of lexical features, assertives consist of a great deal of adjectives and noun phrases to describe the institution strengths. Mottos are also commonly used in these assertives with a wide range of patterns. In terms of syntactic features, the active voice outnumbers the passive voice in this type of discourse. Furthermore, the complex and simple sentences in active forms occur far more frequently than compound and compound-complex sentences. Particularly, parallel structures are used to emphasize the training and research capability of the colleges and universities. With regard to semantic features, there exist four types of assertives in PWMs: assertion, description, statements of fact and conclusion

[4] AN INVESTIGATION INTO HEDGING DEVICES IN ACADEMIC WRITING OF VIETNAMESE THIRD-YEAR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DA NANG – UNIVERSITY OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDIES
This thesis examined how the third-year students employ the hedging devices in their writing. With the high demand in learning foreign languages nowadays, achieving proficiency of English seems to be the goal that everyone wants to try to accomplish. Students, especially the third-year students in Department of English at the University of Foreign Language Studies, are the well-qualified subjects to the study. The study was designed in quantitative approach, together with the methods such as descriptive, analytic and inductive methods. The data of the study was collected in 200 sample essays of 200 students whose majors are English. The researcher has carried out step by step to find out the present situation of hedging devices in academic writing in the level of university students. Firstly, the data was collected and classified from 200 essays in style of academic writing with the given topic in the limited time. Secondly, the researcher analyzed the data based on the suggested framework. Comparing the data collected with the theories suggested, the researcher came up with the results to fulfill the proposed questions. A number of hedging devices which belonged to eight main types of hedges were employed in the students’ essays. Among these, the most commonly used hedging were the hedging verbs and epistemic modals, which confirms the claims of the previous researchers and scholars. Simultaneously, the errors related to hedging devices appearing in the essays were also analyzed and the causes of the errors were proposed. The differences between L1 and L2 of the students and the unawareness of the students about the role of hedging devices in academic writing might be the two main causes of the errors in the students’ essays. The results of the use of hedges and the typical hedging errors might lead students as well as teachers of English to have appropriate strategies in studying and teaching English

[5] AN INVESTIGATION INTO INSTRUCTIONS IN CAMBRIDGE TESTS
This is a corpus-based study on syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features of instructions in Cambridge Tests. An investigation is made to find out how the structures have been used in English as well as provide a better understanding of the function of syntactic forms used in instructional text. The data of the study are collected from the practice tests in Cambridge systems such as: KET, PET, FCE, CAE and CPE. The data are described and analyzed basing on qualitative and quantitative methods. Together with the analysis, a discussion and comments on syntactic and semantic features have been made. The thesis also suggests some guidelines for further researches on different fields of instructions in testing so that other authors study deeper the interesting areas of instructions in language testing.

[7] AN INVESTIGATION INTO TEACHERS’ CLASSROOM LANGUAGE IN ENGLISH CLASS AT HIGH SCHOOLS IN DA NANG CITY
This study aims at conducting the linguistic features of classroom language used by teachers in English lectures at high schools in Da Nang City in terms of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. The theoretical background of speech acts, discourse analysis and functional grammar are used as the framework for analysis. Both qualitative and quantitative were applied to the data collection and data analysis. Data used for the study was collected from the recordings of English lectures at some high schools in Da Nang city and the questionnaires. Informants of thesis were ninety four teachers of English from some high schools in Da Nang City. The first part of the analysis was to discover the features of language that teachers used in English class according to five discourse moves in classroom. In each moves, the structures of different types of sentences as well as theirs meaning functions were analyzed. The second part was to discuss about some reasons leading to teachers‟ difficulties in using English in lectures. The study found that teachers used different kinds of sentences including declarative, imperative, interrogative and exclamative in each move of the lesson to express various speech functions such as statement, command, question and offer. What is more, syntactic elements in Mood/Residue structure also showed different functions in each kind of sentence. Hopefully, the research results can help teachers and language learners get some experiences to teach and learn language effectively.
